Homoeopathy and Allopathic systems of medicines; the incomparable paradox.

Key words: Principles- Poles apart, different Planes, Materialistic versus Dynamic, incongruent comparison.

“We must admit that we have never fought the homeopath on matters of principle. We  Fought them because they came into our community and got the business.”

Dr. J.N. McCormack, AMA, 1903(1)

“It has never occurred to us that the very mode of reasoning which we have taken for granted may itself be a barrier toward a real understanding of the Phenomena of life.”

These are the words of renowned Edward .C.Whitmont an Allopathically trained Psychotherapist who was contemporary and student of Carl.G.Jung. “The Concept of Causality namely linear association of cause and effect….. has always been an unquestioned logical category in scientific work(2).

Causality is the relationship between causes and effects. It is considered to be fundamental to all natural science, especially physics. Confusion of causality and determinism (exactness) is particularly acute in quantum mechanics, this theory being Acausal in the sense that it is unable in many cases to identify the causes of actually observed effects or to predict the effects of identical causes.(3) So, cause is not in line with effect, it varies.

Thus, the linearity of his mechanical expectations prohibited Planck from having a mechanical explanation. This is why he had to resort to Boltzmann’s probabilistic arguments. Planck when faced with roadblock in his experimentations upon black bodies, instead of abandoning the theory that it no more comes under classical Physics; he embraced an entirely different thought to accommodate non-linear motions of Electrons. .”(4) It was neither by experiment nor by standards of Physics but only on Observations of natural occurrences which got endorsed by Einstein as well.

In a 1909 article entitled “The Scientific Reasonableness of Homeopathy” by Royal S. Copeland, A.M., M.D.  he states:

“. . a chemical, technically an electrolyte, when dissolved, is dissociated into parts or particles smaller than the atoms and known as ions. The more dilute the solution the greater is the dissociation and consequently the atoms are less in number and the ions increased. In a solution infinitely dilute, the dissociation is absolute and the chemical is present only in a state of ionization.”(5)

If you don’t believe that properties of the solute remain in solvents diluted beyond the presumed limit, make the assays for ionic concentration, i.e. do the tests to identify homeopathic remedies ionic concentration tests as against plain water!

But Homoeopaths are not accepted when they prove it anything but on allopathic standards. As The Washington Post reported that the two most contentious topics in the Western world are Jesus Christ and Homeopathy; (6) Why all Medical Sceptics are still stuck in reductionist view of Galen, who saw Human body as entities related to each other. What stops them from realizing the truth? We are not asking for ‘conversions’ but only acceptance of our work or at least leave us to work in peace.

The truth is even though Allopaths have advanced enormously in dissecting human body into thinnest slices virtually; they still cannot even cure completely a simple Allergic Rhinitis. All true Practioners know that Allergies grow into Bronchial Asthma in their care so few of good intentioned Doctors suggest to try Alternative therapies off the record to their Patients.

Scientific Laws: Scientists postulate that the basic laws of the universe are unchangeable, and through observation and experimentation, humans determine the validity of their beliefs to better understand the nature of reality. (7)

The four steps of the scientific method are,

  1. Observation of a phenomenon:

In Homoeopathy, that is ‘Likes cure likes’ or Nature’s Law of Cure,’ Similia Similibus Curantur’.

  1. Formulation of a hypothesis:

Let the like substances for each disease picture found in nature be explored and applied to cure those maladies.

  1. Prediction of future outcomes or other phenomena:

This was accomplished by Dr. Hahnemann by carefully evaluating all olden medical Data and compiling which circumstances lead to cure. For example if a stronger dissimilar force meets natural disease it suspends natural disease until its strength wanes off, again natural disease progresses as before. This is the way Allopathic prescriptions work. Anti-pyretic for fever, Analgesics for Pains, so on and so forth.

Smallpox vaccine, the first successful vaccine to be developed, was introduced by Edward Jenner in 1798. He followed up his observation that milkmaids who had previously caught cowpox did not later catch smallpox by showing that inoculated cowpox protected against inoculated smallpox. This could be the best example of Nature’s Law of Cure. (Wiki) Edward Jenner was contemporary of Dr.Hahnemann and he endorsed Jenner’s cow pox vaccine. (Organon 6th edition.page.no.130/131 f.note 47)

Unfortunately, Contrary to this Polio Vaccine did not work like wise, though its prepared from diluted Polio Virus; not similar but same substance, it has lots of side effects and a link has been found between the vaccine and increase in the number of cases of ‘Acute Flaccid Paralysis’ (AFP)as the report dated Dec 4th 2015, suggests in National daily ‘The Hindu.’ (8) It has been clearly demonstrated in the above mentioned study that Polio is swapped by AFP.

  1. Experimentation to test the validity of the predictions:

The Famous experiment where Hahnemann himself took the decoction of cinchona bark and got all the characteristics of Malarial fever. It’s an open challenge anyone can redo this experiment and check the results.  An example of this Natural Law is China’s alkaloid quinine; which cures Malaria even today.

Interestingly I read an article by a sceptic claiming Hippocrates did not suggest ‘Law of Similars ’. Yet that critique clearly showed how Hippocrates operated in the lines of ‘Similia’…Some people think that ‘homoios’ and ‘autos’ merely means ‘fitting’, ‘of the same kind’.so the first quote above merely says that cause and remedy belong to the same class. If the cause is ‘too hot or too cold’, the remedy must be of the same kind; wounds however need surgical treatment and the result of wrong food should be solved by diet.”(Skepsis)  (9)Hippocrates was not a Homeopath _ Stichting Skepsis.html)

Indeed this is what Homoeopathy is all about, it is of ‘same kind’ or similar, not ‘same thing’ like a vaccine. This skeptic still provides good examples of Hippocrates applying Homoeopathic principles based on his own experiences, it’s just a tread of knowledge; but could not develop it into a Medical thought, which later Dr.Hahnemann did. It also led to the discovery of Homoeopathic ‘Operacy’ by him meaning that natural Law tamed to work for Humanity unlike accidental happy go lucky cures.

Dr Hahnemann has set clear cut Premise for Homoeopathic principles application. It is for naturally occurring diseases or ‘Dynamic’ in nature, in new age terminology “Genetic”, as well as Immunological Issues. Other problems have to be treated accordingly like Diet and regime, Hygiene or Physiotherapy.

“Only in the most Urgent cases, where danger of life and imminent death allow no time for the action of a Homoeopathic remedy-….scarcely minutes-…..in sudden accident occurring to previously healthy individuals, for example Asphyxia,…it is admissible and judicious at all events…to stimulate irritability and sensibility….for there is no natural diseases to be removed…..to this category belongs antidotes to poisonings, alkalis to mineral acids….pg.152,. Organon of Medicine., by Dr.Hahnemann.

Dr.Hahnemann’s good old friend Dr.Hufeland one of the best critique as well as earliest Sceptic whose contribution to Homoeopathy is enormous; mockingly said that it only removes symptoms and not disease. This alone prompted Hahnemann to search for “cure model”, for the genetically oriented disorders or so called Soil/Miasma the base Nature of the Individual. This led to the disease classification as

Acute diseases: caused by external elements infectious in nature like Fevers and other life threatening diseases, usually self-limiting ones. Infections can be overcome by increased Immunity due to Homoeopathy, but each case is decided on its merits.

Chronic diseases which have a long course; no imminent threat to life except in acute flare ups, but will neither subside nor rectified on their own and are carried over to their off springs. Homoeopathy is most suitable for diseases of this nature where Allopathy usually removes symptoms but diseases are progressive.

Though our newest  Sceptic , Dr.Venkaraman Ramakrishnan a man of repute, unfortunately is ill informed and has based his allegations on hearsay which itself is against scientific spirit. (10)Whether our Nobel Laureate is proving what Edward De bono suggests,”You can be a thinker without being an intellectual. Indeed many intellectuals are not particularly good thinkers.” He did not compare within  two Medical  thoughts like Homoeopathy and Herbal therapies , he took a safe bet like Astrology and Homoeopathy both which  are not on a fight back mode.

Do not jump to the conclusion that these new skeptics who call themselves “TAM-Truth about Alternative Medicines” are well armoured with knowledge, before rubbishing Homoeopathy unlike their older counterparts. They haven’t done any Homework they just sit on the panels use cheap tactics like ridiculing, rejecting evidence provided without examining and hate speech. They are worried of immense popularity about which they themselves unswervingly supply data and think millions of people who take Homoeopathy are fools and are beyond salvaged.

They just argue that, “….. it’s unfortunate; that millions are using it; say even Medical as well as University Students are catching up with it.”(11)  A good Thinker will be aghast to note, so much of venom spilled against a Medical Therapeutic system which has survived only due to patronage of Common Man for centuries; why is it so?  Is it a terrorist outfit? There is lot more to it than just cynicism.

Even when Dr. Bellare of IIT.,Mumbai, said Homoeopathic dilutions have Nano particles it was ridiculed citing  it may be due to contamination since dilutions were procured from Local Shop as against manufactured under stringent conditions. (12)

Thanks for the Sceptics; attacks on Homoeopathy have trigged a chain reaction in Homoeopathic fraternity which has produced enormous Data about Scientifics of Homoeopathy by Non Homoeopathic Scientists which is good for us as well as our Patrons.

“It is not… That some people do not know what to do with truth when it is offered to them,

But the tragic fate is to reach, after patient search, a condition of mind-blindness, in which

The truth is not recognized, though it stares you in the face.” Sir William Osler, physician,

The natural healing force within each of us is the greatest force in getting well.” ― Hippocrates.

So, our exponentially growing Client base as well as Homoeopaths should carry on our commendable work for the betterment of All of us.

“I’m a science journalist. I don’t celebrate science; I criticize it, because science needs critics more than cheerleaders. I point out gaps between scientific hype and reality. That keeps me busy, because, as you know, most peer-reviewed scientific claims are wrong”, says John Horgan(13) in Scientific American journal. So he himself claims he treats the skeptics skeptically. But as he suggests let the world be harsher on mammograms and Wars but don’t be soft on Homoeopathy we need our critiques to push us to move forward. And dialogues and healthy debates are always welcome.

One of my Patient reacted “Allopaths says don’t go to Homoeopathy and you say don’t go to Allopathy….”. I said “We never ever ask an emergency case to stop allopathic or come to us alone as we are here to help our Patients to get maximum health benefits. We  are not in a cat fight with any system because our Plane of action is totally unparalleled.

Century strike

Chennai as it’s called now, had been called as Chenna(i) patnam, Madrasu patnam. It has always been unique in its Cultural as well as geographical typology. But this time something very different happened, it shattered its own records of more than a century; in down pouring rains, of course. Yes, Chennai gradually upgraded its rainfall from better than previous years to ten year’s best and stopping the third innings after its own century records broken.
Being here for fifteen years now, I have been part of praying for sufficient rains every year; wait with anguish will this year be better! so that summer and extended summer will be little trouble free. This was cumulative effect of all the years, provably. But what it left behind was insurmountable. Lives were shattered, households have to rebuilt from the scratch, luxury cars which never received any respect from battered roads and chaotic traffic suffered much more shame in hands of rain god. They kept floating everywhere and owners had difficulty in catching their own cars.
Did it wash out everything? No, not everything, as in every case of disaster trails, humanity prevailed and reality emerged. It may leave behind a lesson or two for our future. So as a Spirit to help others gained priority, lifesaving again became foremost one. Everything reduced to basic needs.
The youth who instantly jumped into rescue operations few losing their precious lives in saving other as much precious ones, emerged as heroes.Kudos to youngsters whose names are not heard or faces not seen who are penultimate of selflessness and bravery. They surpassed their movie Idols , of whom with few exceptions mostly remained in cosy rooms and were shying away from living up to their reel life personas.
When nothing was misplaced at and around our areas we started feeling guilty as we heard on Social media about ravages of Rain. In fact as we came to know most of old city was unhurt in this process and it’s not that Mylapore alone was saved. So, people plunged into helping others who weren’t as lucky as themselves. It’s a way to be part of the big process and feeling blessed by” Kereya neeranu kerege chelli”, (giving back the water given by the lake to it) giving back to the eternal cosmos.
The LOVE and AFFECTION poured on to us by our friends and relatives just blew us all. Whether it’s known people or unknown they just showed solidarity and it boosted our morale amazingly. Actually our friends in other cities knew more about the happenings here than most of us, which again is heart-warming. It kept us afloat.
It was a flooding of volunteers as well and we could help in some ways like pack food packets for distribution. Since am a Homoeopath, medicines were dispensed to prevent Leptospirosis and dengue and being part of camps while delivering what was in our hands was really fulfilling. It gave us an opportunity to talk directly to victims and in the process put liniment on their wounds. When a young lean woman says she is not lactating properly to feed her 52 days old baby, I wonder, is she in need of medicines or simply is she hungry? I curse myself for not able to help her, to get food for herself.
But looking at them we can understand the amazing grit and mental strength; while helping each other as and when required, they take all difficulties into their stride; find solutions and move on. As one can guess, there resides the wisdom and spirit of our country.
The best part being forwarding messages to get help for people in trouble and connecting victims to their helping hands as our network and phone were functioning. When we hear that pregnant woman got help and delivered safely our joy knew no bounds. There were so many heart touching stories which made us cry, each passing day that we lost count of it. For the first time we took to social media without guilt of wasting time, but to get help for others or at least we believed so!
Practically Chennai is back in full zoom by now, but these memories will linger for many years to come. We can say to our grandchildren about the happenings and feel proud that ‘during Chennai floods, volunteers out- numbered victims at times’. It’s a way to say thanks to all of our Friends who stood by us, prayed for us and helped Chennai to be back as before.

Homage to a legendary master

“Vaagarthaviva samprukthau vaagartha prathipattaye
jagataha pitarau vande parvathi parameshwarau”
This verse from’ Kumarasambhava’ comes to my mind when I think of Vasantalakshmi madam and master Narasimhachari. I never had an opportunity of brushing with Living Legends before I came to Mylapore and I discovered the truth behind those Cliché’s after meeting these dancing duo. And when It comes to revered Sri.Narasimhachari , whom I could meet in close quarters because of my Daughter’s Bharatanatyam classes, is Excellence personified. He may not be in Person now, but legacy left behind by him in training his exemplary students is not Past but future of Bharatanatyam.
I always admired his Child like smile and witty remarks; he’s a very pleasant and down to earth type of person. But My daughter says he is very strict and disciplinary when it comes to Dance lessons. When my daughter was part of a dance program during rehearsals I could see how upset he was about a missing minute detail. He saw to it, that that one was rectified. Ah! That’s what a 100% performance is in need of isn’t it.
I never missed Master and Akka’s performance; that’s how they are called by their awed students fondly. You don’t know whom you should follow because both are incredible performers with
Perfect sync and radiate wonderful Chemistry. In that ‘Narasimhavatara’ dance you see real Narasimha’s rage on stage and audience will be enthralled. It always overwhelmed me to watch their act of navarasas. In each of his performance, he will be getting into the skin of the character; that sanskrit word ‘Taddhyatma’ fits to explain his involvement. His enactments never justified his chronological age.
When his Sangeet Kutchery was on a day of our journey we rushed to the venue directly, as we cannot afford to miss his vocal recital. His recital keeping up to all of his norms, was one of its kind; displaying the gold standards of Manodharma sangeetham.
He is a true gentleman, like that subhashit, ‘vajradaapi kathoraani mruduni kusumaadapi’: Good people are harder than diamond for their own difficulties and softer than a flower for people who are in difficulty. I knew he was great sympathiser of Homoeopathy .
It again warms my heart to know such a person who lived for his Art form who rendered ‘seva’ to almighty through his art. One thing pains us all is the fact that he should have lived for many more years to train many more budding Dancers. He may have shined through his calibre unto his departure, just like Abdul Kalaamji; but we are at loss.

Perils of praise

Praise is a double edged sword. If you won’t acknowledge it you look arrogant; if you seem to be visibly happy people may think the other way. I always remember Basavanna a great saintly scholar of Karnataka who said “Hogali honna shoolakkerisuvaru”; ‘praising is like piercing with golden spear’. Though made of gold; spear will kill you anyway, is it not?
Handling praise is tricky as such. I go blank when people say your article was nice or you spoke very well, I don’t know how to show them how much it matters to me to get those compliments. I just smile and at times people may think am arrogant. One of our Family friend handles this very beautifully, he quickly acknowledges the compliments with an endearing smile or brushes it off mildly with crediting it to almighty. Even at times we will be trapped by people who want to get a work done or who want to have psychological hold on us; ‘I praised you and you must be grateful to me’ sort of.
I first try to figure it out why my client is praising me, few praise genuinely which is not outright but subtle like their mannerisms and grace. They are the most endearing ones. Few bring in their family and friends sure way of admiration. But few think on praising I may take special interest; take good care of them. It’s an obligation you have to help the person who has praised you. But who praise me on first instance is always taken with a pinch of salt. They make me nervous because those types of people are already prejudiced: does not work on basis of merits of the matter and cannot be satisfied by any amount of good work. These are the ones who propagate Homoeopathy is no good soon after their first consultation without even bothering themselves with following the course properly or still worse not even touching those medicines; since I did not fit into their Ambit.
When it comes to praising children one should be very careful. Children tend to recognize even noticing their actions is also praising. If you are telling to your neighbor that your child cried for a pizza and your husband reluctantly bought it, child if happens to hear your conversation is convinced that crying and gaining what you need is an achievement. He tends to follow the same pattern in all future endeavors. And children brought in constant praise environment think they are invincible or that of royal birth or even sometimes are of special powers. They cannot make out that at times those compliment seeming gifts are targeted towards their parents who are in high positions. So, saving one’s children from ‘praise’ is very essential. When my Father or father in law praised their sons I wonder really did this exist in them when we were young. Praise was a rare commodity especially for Boys in those days and after retirement all fathers set on a mission of praising their sons. At an matured age Praise has no negative effect and just lightens your heart. But the ones who were constantly marketed by their parents in their childhood, as good in studies, in the way of creating history or who seemed royal by their pampering now are nowhere in sight. Most of them could not even get hold of decent jobs. Such parents are still defending their progeny in Public why their son failed in life with stories of bitterness.
Don’t read too much stuff on parenting. Telling one’s daughter that she is most beautiful girl in the world means instilling superiority complex or still worse inferiority trigger bossing in her. Because children cannot face the harsh realities when someone comments on their hairs or looks, cannot make out difference between subjective parental feelings and reality. But children are conditioned to ’no expectations’ tend to take comments in their stride and compliments always inspire them to touch new heights. Each compliment which is a bonus since its real and from third party. Keeping check on feelings of parents is essential as well as praise should be subtle and in action. But gifts should never be in gadget form for very young children. Gadgets at right age and time could prove to be good choice. Providing every other thing available in market is no fun and value less for kids. Just like addicts who consume more and more stuff for that ‘kick’ children tend to demand for new arrivals in market to get the kick or just to show off. Spending money on kids just because you have surplus, does not make a excellent parent, right?
In India ( based on western,” theory of good’s”) even film magazine review writers are brought to News rooms as saintly knowledge dispensers and they will preach whatever they think they know. Follow your instincts; see what worked for your parents or your friends. What are your priorities in child upbringing? Forget those Ads on happy families nicely dressed kids, loving grandparents etc., It’s all made up not day today affair. And Westerners are talking of co-sleeping, eating together and we are shifting to buffet lunch at our homes.
For good upbringing may not be flashy, sweet, dreamy, fairy-tale sort of things done but keeping our children grounded, If they learn least expectations, equal to their peers not materialistic but by logic, recognize their individuality and to handle comparison with peers; our job as parents is done, is it not. So, be honest, realistic to yourself and to your child tell them harsh truth and prepare them for the big ruthless world out there to take both sarcasm and compliments such that it helps in their progress.
Have a great weekend and set on a mission to save your children from perils of praise.

Reflections on Doctors day

Happy to be now and here
Happy to be am whatever
Not so young to take refuge in Naive
Not so old to be bold n wise
Yet jittery on seeing patients keep trust in us and fight despair
Can I raise unto their hopes and help repair
Thanks for our friendly seniors and groups
Its a straw for the drowning to grope
Being doctor and riding waves up and down
End of tunnel showing light of beacon
Again turns out to be a mirage of sort
Confirms life is uncertain and tart
Need fearless spirit to survive the pain and vain
Reaffirmed faith in God’s golden mine

Anti-drug Abuse Day

June 26th is marked as Anti-drug abuse day. Drug abuse is a serious threat to personal Health as well as that of society . Young People who took to drugs usually will be finding all sorts of ways to procure it, its common know how. But the after effects of drugs are very disabling and its effects cannot be removed even after rehab has been provided. When we read the drug addicts account which still more common in west, survivors lead a very pitiable life; maybe publishing such stories in one’s school curriculum may discourage young adults to try it, I suppose.
Homoeopathically also this task is quite challenging; at times youngsters are still searching reasons to go back to their original exhilarating moment. The most frightening side effects are not withstanding they may go back to their habits for a moment of ecstasy. Since drug abuse is not dynamic disease except that craving part of it. It can be modified to some extent if the person is willing to quit the habit; yet Homoeopathy has to fight a tough battle to overcome the effects of this poison.
Few cases have been treated with success in this clinic but the unwillingness of youngsters to quit the Habit was tough to handle. One boy of nineteen years with cannabis habit came to me to treat his nerve wrecking nightmares. He took treatment with an oath that he will not take drugs again. After few months his symptoms started recurring, but he simply stated to me, “Doc, it’s even not an addiction like smoking; I can leave it whenever I want”. I have heard this lame excuse very often. But smoking kills the person, drugs and alcohol destroy the very strata of our society is it not. Why you should get into such an issue which is unproductive, which kills your life sap as well as health resources. For that adrenaline rush you can join some adventure sports isn’t it?
Also some say it’s easily available in corner shops just like other tobacco products and I suggest Peer pressure should only be considered for positive things. Not to blame others for our weaknesses and timely help should be sought with commitment. After all it’s your life.
A man of about 30 years got treatment for his sleeplessness and acidity after few weeks he narrated to me that he used to take drugs in his young age, but now he is completely out of it. Ah! That provided the cliche, treated on this basis it got settled; but treatment for Infertility was not continued due to his personal reasons.
In another case patient had severe Asthma which got better only after I got to know that he uses drugs. But there is that sleeplessness and nightmares running through the aftermath of drug abuse which devastates the person and cannot be treated traditionally. Even infertility or sterility, excess tiredness, lack of interest in day today affairs amounting to depression apart from worsening of existing troubles is caution for all young Turks to steer away from this devastating habit, I guess. Two swords cannot be in one Anvil so as; bad habit as well as Focus on achievements cannot go hand in hand. So Choose Life and get that, ‘FEEL UP’ by achieving something unattainable. It is both delightful as well as makes your Mark in the society isn’t it? Have a joyous week ahead

Teenage woes

Hey, I want talk to you teeny-weeny. Not to worry I will not advice, nor I ask you to procure more marks. It’s just a dialogue and talk back if it helped!
I know teen girls are easy to talk to; but boys never give a heed. Does it hurt; when in company of attitude or misdemeanor? Yes for parents it hurts. But I love to talk to you all coz you are sweet and your actions are age justified. Even you are not able to figure out what’s going on your ever full, crumpled brains. Since you hate to talk to your rigid Parents, this talk could be a let out.
Usually Teenagers want to get noticed, yet know not what to do. But by common sense I can say people talk about achievers or toppers in studies. Even being good at any sport or a guy coming up in local newspaper are always talked about. In friends circle, humorous guy is an instant hit. Or else just throw away that Idea of getting noticed; be yourself. Even superstars are forgotten after their films dwindle, right. So, why bother,” Haste Haste kat jaaye raste”( Just move on in your life with a smile).
Getting inspired from TV shows and Movies is conducive, yet their main motive is not educating people but to draw audience should be borne in mind. When they dramatize normal happenings it’s attractive but life is harsh and not that surreal or idealistic, is it not? Doing something out of the way just to get noticed or to impress someone, can have serious damage on one’s future; right?
Before doing anything which can jeopardize your life you must ask yourself, is it worth the risk? Is it really a life and death question for me? After five years does this really matter as much as of now? Is this friend (accomplice) who is instigating me will stay with me and go through hell if things won’t work out as planned? Why should one get into such an odd thing in the very first place? Most of the time curious onlookers or just once offenders pay a heavy price is it not?
Nothing is life and death question but LIFE CARVING is.
I read this somewhere,’ Friends support good habits Accomplices support bad habits’. Sometimes in pursuit of or to project oneself, ‘COOL’ teenagers may get into certain groups. Yet few friends are like Dhuryodhan; who gave lots of goodies to Karna but was it really good for him? If you work for a crook how much ever friendly he is; it is regressive, agree?

Not listening to elders and doing things pleases you is okay fine it’s forgivable, can you forgive yourself after say ten years when you are stranded in your life aimlessly? Friends do have a very crucial and important part in everyone’s life. They alone are not everything in life and cannot guide always since they are equally naive, is it not? Something good for your close friend may not be as good to you since both are different individuals, is it not? In fact teens should engage in talks with friendly elders apart from parents to have a non-judgmental point of view on life defining aspects.
In studies most Teenagers want quick money or choose courses which may not be their dream defined ones. Just because one of the friends recommended it or en-mass all friends are in that group they also tend to go by the flock. Again few people think getting into prestigious institutions by hook or crook will ensure good future. If you dig it a bit you can see, only royal road to better future is college which suits one’s needs, smart (hard) work, improving skills with all possible avenues and focus.
Now it’s time to shape one’s future, instead of following beaten path and hoping for miracles to happen ,take things into your stride, listen to well-wisher’s advice who happens to be in the profession you aspire to be in and then decide what’s best for you.
And last but very important Homoeopathic medicines can clear negative attitudes and improve aptitude besides improving Concentration and memory, try it.

You or Me

11046485_1541147246167691_3603445001390996486_nWhen the call finally came to tell me that I am ‘in’ for the ‘Neeya Naana’ debate show on Star Vijay, I felt excited. Still, they were in need of People who provide counselling and not a medical doctor; had a doubt whether I am a bit out of place for the show. Logically I am ‘in’ because they needed people who took up ‘counselling’ out of interest  and not studied Psychology basically but later added to their actual profession ; those ‘others’ on the bandwagon.

Mine is a different story, being a Homoeopath my job requires counselling at all levels. So, I studied all available texts on Psychology and practiced it, sometimes exclusively as well, at my Clinic, I fit the bill is it not?

The studio and sets didn’t seem surreal but the Man behind the show is really congenial and gained our appreciation instantly. The host seemed to have an ‘Air’ around him which is admissible considering his Pan global presence wherever Tamilians are found.

Atmosphere being exuberant and after a Pleasant intro; the debate went awry being lenient towards Public. They shot weird questions but the gist being the very Necessity of this Profession. For me it seemed they all are from Utopian world and forgetting the ground realities. It is also true that professionals in general are engrossed in their own so much so that they lack co-ordination and are ill equipped to face direct questions. Few of us are not good presenters or orators, mostly we could not figure out what our Host wants from us.

But few areas were our comfort zones and Public gave a verdict on our side. When it was my turn it went upbeat; surprisingly I gave apt answers to the queries of public and got appreciation from my colleagues as well as the host. But my joy of presenting our sided views comprehensively did not last long as one of the guest from Public arena bombarded us with all varieties’ of accusations like being corporate puppets and pushing counselling for monetary gains. Their main concern was targeting small kids and disciplining in the name of counselling. It could be detrimental for the kids and may segregate them from their peers, being the main argument. Although it appears correct, Psychologists alone cannot be blamed for this, it should be taken case to case, since over generalization does not help, right?

Again it seemed too much for all of us since to my knowledge all on our side had taken to this Counselling for personal fulfilments rather than monetary gains. People who organise seminars for corporates or for kids with big promises weren’t  seemed to be there on our side and it was like bashing the pupils who are present in the class in the name of pupils, the actual culprits who are absent; yet are let off!

After this cyclone seemed subsiding and we started to gain our lost ground the second blasting begun by a so called Psychologist himself from other side. In fact I did not get what’s on his mind but he got emotional and scored points over us. At the end we were left bruised not able to figure out what he really meant.

One of our colleagues came up with splendid explanation about Psychology and the profession and it helped I think. Somehow after angry exchanges and fire flies reconciliation by our host who oft repeated ‘Public are likewise, you have to answer them anyway’. Still we were aghast how our host allowed so much of emotional hostility towards us besides asking all of us to be calm.

The summative assessment on the part of Psychiatrist was pleasing as it was balanced. Yet I kept wondering how come a Psychiatrist, whose profession alone based on uncertainty which is also termed as ‘Abnormal Psychology’ can take stand on a profession whose scientific nature, is in question. Even in Psychology or Psychiatry and other non- exact Sciences where mind and abstract forms are involved Materialistic theories does not hold ground.

Yet their contribution to human health is profound. They all talked about Freud but not equally important Jung was amusing for me.

When our host asked us which books you read to keep abreast with the present times most of us shied away. The only soul pinching memory of this whole thing is I missed my opportunity to tell my host that I read pub-Med, Elsevier as well as Psych central articles and scientific research papers online which connect Psychology and neurology. I delved too much upon books and blame it on my exhausted state due to long shoot.

All is well that ends well and am happy of be part of this sort of eye opening debate if you take it so. But wait has to see the true colors on screen to know what is left after cuts, fingers crossed.

Teen Talk

Boy of seventeen came inside my consulting room with his mother. Just you can understand on seeing him how much he is bored about coming to a Doctor.  On enquiry he will just stare; only his mother answers. I usually try to talk to them those subjects they will be fond of. All boys think Doctors are boring and will be advising relentlessly, only one girl behaved likewise. But they warm up to subjects they may like to talk about. Usually it is Career for boys and beauty tips ;hair related issues for both of them.

Prejudice or fixed mind-set is innate to teens and it’s a tough nail. That air/attitude about them angers adults and will puncture their egos. But considering Teens as equal to Adults is dangerous mistake. It’s tough but after all he/she is our child is it not. We cannot be ruthless. So, being matter of fact with compassion is most essential on our part.

So, Prejudice=compassion.

Teenagers give so much of importance to trivia (or silly matters) that we feel sick of getting them off it. But sometimes travelling in time machine to our own teenage may settle the thinks. Even if we were not like that at least we can gather such references of close friends behaving so, right? Being extremely tolerant on our part is needed. Better if we could steer them out of those habits with

big talk child at heart
big talk child at heart

and agreeing on few issues mutually. For example you say that dress is awesome but teen holds on to age old notion that either too thin/fat for that dress and keeps changing the outfits  for the Nth time, disgusting  is it not;as  time is running out. Even bribing or just hugging your child may all that is needed to fix the matter.

So Trivia=Tolerance.

Age related Hormonal change brings on much of alterations in their feelings that are quite natural. But at the same time they are vulnerable to dangers of getting into the company of wrong people as well. So, Teens should be handled as if they are one year olds. You tie a rope around the baby’s waist let him walk on his own he will falter but we will behave as if we are not aware still remove all blocks and dangers for the baby. Likewise we should be get associatedly dissociated. Just as our Prime Minister said on Independence day speech tracking their activity is very important. Educate them about our familial, Cultural and our own personal preferences as well as our vision for their future. For example you are not for some cultural deviations but your teen will be willing to move with hi-fi society. It is better to talk about those delicate matters; rather than letting them to do whatever they want and suddenly one fine day yelling at them.

So, Immaturity= to educate

Again not only teens but also young adults like to be noticed always. Either they shut themselves up due to shyness or overdo aping some worthless role model and do out of way things just for doing sake.  Both undesired; so, comparisons are useless. We can set a bench mark usually not from our surroundings and remind them time again to emulate their own role models. So, comparing, nagging or insulting Teenagers is in turn detrimental to them and parent child relationship.

So, Getting Noticed=role model

Talking about money and how much is wasted on their activities may not help to win teens heart, (actually it hurts) still it is essential to let your child know how much expenditure is consolidated to meet their needs and wants. Again they must be aware of difficulties in the household, but it must be in an adult to adult manner. They must be aware of all happenings of their home and forcibly (otherwise they will not care) involved in all happenings. Once they get engaged they will be happy to help their parents in household chores but little pushing each time is needed.

So, Values=communication.

Handling Teens is tough no doubt but do our parents felt so when we were teens? Taking things as it comes and simple solutions to day to day happenings is all needed. Thinking dramatically and giving undue importance to minor problems is not helping. But not caring for the child’s emotional needs is also not good. Good communication is basic thing to have a great future of your child. Yet communication gap, occasional yelling on parent’s part all will add zing to our life is it not. Have a great week ahead.
